The Use and Installation of Armoured Electrical Cables

Understanding Armoured Electrical Cables

Armored cables are a type of cable that have a sturdy protective armor to protect the wires. Although they are common, most of us know very little about them. Can you distinguish this type of cable from typical PVC cables? When is this cable used? Generally, armoured electrical cables are a type of reinforced cable. Essentially, they are stronger than standard wires. Most of us mistakenly believe that Steel Wire Armored (SWA) cables are the only cables with armor.

Uses of Armoured Electrical Cables

The main purpose of armored cables is to provide external protection. Therefore, when transmitting power in unfavorable environments, electrical armored cables will serve you better. Outdoor environments are an example of situations that require the use of armored cables. Outdoor armored cables are effective in such environments because their armor provides sufficient protection against UV rays, water, and mechanical risks.

Needless to say, you need to be meticulous when choosing the suitable armored cable for your specific application. Each armor classification is best suited for a particular role. For example, steel armor cables are suitable for locations with high drops and applications involving extreme tension. On the other hand, if you plan to do some underground applications, it's best to choose steel tape armored cables. This type of cable can withstand excessive compression, which any wire installed below ground faces.

How to Install Armoured Electrical Cables?

Are you planning to install armoured electrical cables and are confident that you can do it yourself? If the answer is yes, I must admit that the whole process is relatively simple. Most of us often find covering armored cables challenging, especially when dealing with outdoor underground applications. In most cases, uncertainty about whether to use conduit often plagues our minds. Well, armored cables can withstand external forces, so you don't need to use additional protective coverings. However, in this case, you need to ensure that the cable you choose is a buried cable. Even so, you still need to ensure that the cable is buried deep enough to avoid accidental interference.

There is also a need to ensure that the cable you choose is correct. For example, if you intend to install with current requirements lower than 1KV, you should choose low voltage armoured electrical cables. Secondly, you must ensure that the cable is not bent below its manufacturer's specified minimum bending radius. As long as you use armored cables correctly, you can rest assured that they will provide you with optimal service in the long run.
